Business Partnerships
Because businesses felt effects from the health care crisis just as strongly as individuals, HCAEF and HCAN worked closely with the Main Street Alliance, a national group that conducted education and research on health care reform benefits for small businesses.
Between 2000 and 2006, employer-sponsored health coverage premiums increased by 87%. Many businesses desperately wanted to provide health insurance to their employees but could not due to high costs. The soaring costs of health care, which are 24% higher per capita than any other developed nation in the world, were an increasing burden on the nation's economy and global competitiveness.
Now, with health care reform, businesses will see benefits very soon. For example, employers with fewer than 25 workers and average wages of $50,000 or less who choose to offer coverage to employees will receive immediate tax credits of up to 35 percent of premium contributions, rising to 50 percent in 2014.
Businesses have been hit hard by the health care crisis but now have the opportunity to play a critical role in educating others about health care reform.
